Participles and Participle Phrases

Objective:  Students will be able to compose a text with specific details.
  • I can identify and use verbal phrases in writing.
  • I can identify and use participles and participial phrases in writing.

Writing Response: What is a gerund and how is it different from a verb?
To Do:
1) Write in Skills Journal their objectives and I can statements.
2) Independently read the material.
3) Shoulder partner read
4) Go over the material with them.
5) Model our assignment and then the students will work cooperatively.

     5)  pg. 94, Practice and Apply, concept check: "What is a Verb?", complete items 1 & 3 with teacher (guided practice), complete items 2 & 4-10 with shoulder buddy.
     6)  Review as an entire class, pg. 94.

Possessive Nouns

Objective:  SWBAT define and identify possessive nouns in writing.


  • I can define and identify possessive nouns in writing.
Essential Skill:  Define and identify possessive nouns in writing.

IPI:  4-5

Writing Response: 
To Do:  
     1)  Set Objective for learning, students copy into their skills journal.
     2)  Students independently read pgs. 42, (timed) then students read/discuss with shoulder buddies.
     3)  Chapter 2, lesson 3, Practice and Apply, Concept check: Possessive Nouns, Complete items 1 and 3 with teacher (as group), complete items 2, 4-10 with shoulder buddy (timed).
     4)  Review answers as group.
     5)  Thumbs up/down, "How many had 6 of the remaining 8 correct?"
     6)  Exit Ticket: (on notecard), p. 43, B. Revising: Using Possessive Nouns. (Choose 3 items to complete on their notecard and turn in to teacher prior to leaving class.

     4)  Ch. 2 lesson 2 pgs. 40-41, Practice and Apply, Items 1 and 4 with teacher.  Students (shoulder buddies) complete 2,3, & 5-10.  (approximately 10 minutes to complete).
     5)  Review assignment with students.
     6)  Thumbs Up/Down, "How many had 6 of the remaining 8 correct?"

     5)  Guided practice in skills journal, Ch. 2 lesson 1, pg. 38. Practice and Apply, Concept Check: Kinds of Nouns.  Items 1 and 2 with teacher.  Items 3-10 Independently.
     6)  Group survey: Thumbs UP/Down, "How many had at least 5/7 correct?"
