Participles and Participle Phrases

Objective:  Students will be able to compose a text with specific details.

1) Write in Skills Journal their objectives and I can statements.
2) Independently read the material.

5) Model our assignment and then the students will work cooperatively.

Possessive Nouns

Objective:  SWBAT define and identify possessive nouns in writing.

Writing Response: 
To Do:  
     1)  Set Objective for learning, students copy into their skills journal.
     2)  Students independently read pgs. 42, (timed) then students read/discuss with shoulder buddies.
     3)  Chapter 2, lesson 3, Practice and Apply, Concept check: Possessive Nouns, Complete items 1 and 3 with teacher (as group), complete items 2, 4-10 with shoulder buddy (timed).
     4)  Review answers as group.
     5)  Thumbs up/down, "How many had 6 of the remaining 8 correct?"
     6)  Exit Ticket: (on notecard), p. 43, B. Revising: Using Possessive Nouns. (Choose 3 items to complete on their notecard and turn in to teacher prior to leaving class.

Sentence Types

Objective: Students will identify and apply four types of sentences to writing.
  • I can identify and apply the four kinds of sentences in writing.
To Do:
1) Introduce four types of sentences, utilizing text p.16.
2) Transfer lesson objective and definitions into Skills Journal.
3) TeacherTube "Kinds of Sentences" video (4 min)
4) Read p.16 independently
5) Shoulder buddy, Read p. 16
6) Concept Check (A), p17, Items 1-2 as class, orally. Items 3-10 with shoulder/table buddies. Review with teacher.
7) Exit Ticket: Students (partners) create a 4 frame cartoon/comic. Minimum 1 type of sentence per frame.
Scoring Guide:  Title, Author, Labeled sentence in each frame.

Simple Subjects and Predicates

5) Chapter 1 lessons 2 & 4 (Simple Subject & Verb Phrases), Concept Checks guided practice with highlighted items. (p.9) Ch.1 lesson 2: Items: 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9. 10 and (p.13) Ch. 1 lesson 4: Items: 3-10, with shoulder buddies in their Skills Journal. Group review.
6) Student check thumbs-up for understanding at 75% or better of the concept.

Bell Ringers

At the beginning of each day, students will be asked to record the day's bell ringer. This consists of...


  1. the objective we're going to meet,
  2. a question or quote,
  3. and the day's events.


These bell ringers will be graded weekly and compiled in each student's 3-ring binder.

Supply List

We require the students to bring the following items with them everyday.  We ask they bring a composition notebook with them so they can keep track of all their work, as well as their progress--these will be collected for a grade periodically.

  • Loose leaf white notebook paper
  • Pencils
  • Pens (dark blue or black only)
  • 1-2 boxes of Kleenex
  • 2 folders with brads (pockets optional)
    or
    1 1" or 2" 3-ring binder
  • 2 composition notebooks
  • 2-3 different color pens/highlighters
  • Dividers
  • Post-it notes
  • Notecards
  • Planner (provided by the school)
